Sergey Cherep

Sergey was born in St.Petersburg, Russia in 1969. His creative and artistic talents were recognised early. He was encouraged to attend art school and began studying art by the age of eight. During that time Sergey discovered his absolute love of art.

After completing his first few years of school Sergey knew he wanted to attend one of the most prestigious art schools in Europe, the “Serovo Art Institute.” He studied extensively all the classic forms of art including, European art history, photography, printing processes, sculpture, restoration methods, and painted everything from still life to portraits.

Sergey’s images reflect his passion for French Impressionism and his love of colour. Imagination, fuelled by a lifetime of wonderlust is key to his lively landscapes. Energy flows from his paintings with a gentle yet powerful force that keeps one captivated for a lifetime.

His work is exhibited extensively in the United States as well as several European galleries, and in his home country of Russia in St. Petersburg and Moscow.

“The technique of painting that I have embraced is definitely the Post Impressionist style made famous by Van Gogh. I love the simplicity of colour and energy found in his work. The bold unrealistic colours and expressive brushstrokes of my predecessors are my tools as I try to bring a three dimensional feeling out from the painting by using colour, perspective, and a thick texture.

I work with oil, painting on stretched canvas, paper, wood panel and handmade wood boxes, as well as glass, however the mood strikes. I use a minimalist mixing of colours with a dry brush squeezing paint directly on the canvas, using the canvas palette.

My paintings are like fairy-tales…..a dream place. I don’t see things as realistic, I allow for the fantastic to happen. When I travel and paint….the sun, grapes and smells in California speak to me. But anything can motivate me, a picture, a cut watermelon, or even a colour.

It may be the subject matter that captivates people; it’s more the warmth and life in the painting.”
