British painter Sarah Graham was born in Hitchin in 1977, and works almost exclusively in oil on canvas. She completed a BA (hons) in Fine Art painting from De Montfort University, Leicester in 2000. Since graduating Sarah has pursued art and has exhibited in galleries and at art fairs in UK and overseas.
Sarah’s work is a vivid exploration of still life using subjects that offer intense colours. Imagery is often borrowed from childhood including sweet things and toys. Ultimately the subject choice should evoke a sense of wonderment and nostalgia.
Using a photograph as reference Sarah scales up the image by eye and sketches on the form of the shapes. She works to the colours in acrylic first before later overlaying oils and enhancing each element as she goes. Contrasts between areas in and out of focus are a key element of her work. It is these blurred areas that become abstract passages and have proved the most technically challenging sections to paint.
Sarah’s paintings are in private collections across the world, in Europe, USA, Australia, the Middle East, China and South Africa. In 2012 the British band, Kaiser Chiefs, commissioned Sarah to paint the album cover of their singles collection, ‘Souvenir’. Her work is also owned by Standard Chartered Bank, who commissioned several pieces by Sarah for their vast global collection of contemporary portraits.
We are excited to have Sarah Graham join us at Forest Gallery and exhibit her colourful renditions.
