Whispers Of The Landscape - Canvas Edition

Studio Edition · 71 x 71 cm framed

Why we love this piece

We love how Hervé Lenouvel’s deep turquoise marks draw the eye towards that luminous central glow, while flashes of yellow bring a joyful lift. His layered, painterly handling gives the work its distinctive balance of energy and calm, allowing the image to hover beautifully between landscape and abstraction. A striking choice for collectors drawn to expressive colour and an uplifting contemporary spirit.

Born in Brittany, France in 1960, Hervé Lenouvel is a contemporary French artist whose atmospheric oil paintings are inspired by a lifelong connection with the natural world. Growing up in the countryside near the legendary forest of Brocéliande, Lenouvel developed an early fascination with drawing and painting, with the surrounding landscape becoming a lasting influence on his work.

Entirely self-taught, Lenouvel explored watercolour and gouache before discovering oil paint, a medium whose richness and physical quality allowed him to develop his distinctive approach. His early paintings were predominantly figurative, but over time his style became increasingly instinctive and expressive, evolving into the captivating balance between representation and abstraction for which he is now known.

Nature remains at the heart of Lenouvel’s work. Rather than faithfully reproducing a particular landscape, he draws upon observations, memories and sensations gathered from his surroundings. Trees, water, earth and sky emerge through expressive marks and layers of colour, allowing familiar landscapes to become something more evocative and open to interpretation.

Colour is fundamental to his creative process. Working intuitively, Lenouvel builds each composition through the relationship between colour, texture and light until the painting achieves a sense of harmony and balance. The resulting works possess a wonderful sense of atmosphere and movement, capturing not simply the appearance of a landscape but the feeling and emotion of experiencing it.

Hervé Lenouvel continues to live and work in Brittany, and his paintings have been exhibited internationally throughout France, the United Kingdom, Canada and the United States.
