Born in Oaxaca, Mexico in 1968, Didier Mayés is a contemporary artist celebrated for his vibrant and imaginative fusion of abstraction and figuration – particularly through his signature “Big Heads” characters. He studied at the School of Fine Arts of Oaxaca and earned a degree in Industrial Design from the Metropolitan Autonomous University in Mexico City.
Working primarily in oil, Mayés constructs richly layered canvases that balance bold colour with intricate patterns. He experiments with a diverse range of materials – resin pigments, marble dust, earths, and even found objects – often preparing his own pigments to cultivate a uniquely textured and tactile surface.
More recently, Mayés has begun creating large black and white works by engraving into encaustic wax on prepared canvas panels. These statement pieces echo the playful figurative forms he is known for whilst bringing a fresh perspective.
His hallmark subjects, the whimsical “Big Heads,” evoke childhood imagination and introspective narrative. Each oversized figure invites viewers to decode the subtle visual messages nestled within, offering artworks that are both emotionally resonant and visually arresting.
“Painting is dreaming and flying, suffering and feeling. Many of the paintings recall my childhood.” This reflection underlines Didier’s deep connection to the playfulness and emotional depth found in his early years.
Forest Gallery is proud to be Didier Mayés’ exclusive agent in the UK. His vibrant Oaxacan sensibility, experimental use of materials, and seamless melding of cultural storytelling with contemporary abstraction make him a distinctive voice within our collection.
