Dune Study V (Original)
Why we love this piece
Matthew Cordwell’s piece embodies the soft interplay of light and shadow across coastal dunes, a testament to his skill in capturing nature’s fleeting moments. Painted en plein air, the expressive brush strokes bring the scene to life, infusing it with the freshness of a gentle sea breeze. Matthew’s dedication to experiencing landscapes firsthand is evident here, offering collectors a slice of the British coast’s serene beauty. Ideal for those who appreciate a blend of realism and emotion in landscape art.

As a keen landscape photographer, Matthew is never short of inspiration for paintings from the British countryside. You will often find him out and about in all weather conditions in search of his next composition from the local surroundings. Over the years Matthew has developed an emotive loose style, focusing on the play of light and colour in his work.
Preferring to paint en plein air, the artist enjoys the challenge of capturing a scene of changing nature under the wonderfully diverse weather conditions of Britain. “Immersing yourself in the environment and understanding the landscape and play of light is one of the most rewarding and important aspects of painting for me. We are blessed in Britain with such a diverse range of conditions created from the seasonal shifts and daily weather changes and putting myself in the field to experience these elements and changing light is so important. Whether creating small reference studies for development in the studio or completing a painting en plein air, every brush stroke carries intent and meaning and this is what gives a painting life.”
Matthew has travelled extensively both in the United Kingdom and further abroad, gaining reference and inspiration for his artworks. The artist is available for commissions and special requests. For more information, please get in touch with a member of the Forest Gallery team.
