Stephen Hawkins
Stephen Hawkins (b. 1964) is a British landscape painter celebrated for his atmospheric oil paintings of rural life. Born in Surrey and raised in Hurstpierpoint, West Sussex, he spent over thirty years surrounded by the South Downs, whose sweeping views continue to inspire much of his work.
Stephen’s practice focuses on landscapes featuring people, horses and farm animals, painted using traditional oil techniques that capture subtle shifts of light and season. Among his current subjects are local Sussex hunting scenes, distinguished by their evocative early-morning mists, soft haze and quiet farmland drama; reflecting the enduring rhythms and stillness of the countryside.
In 2014 he received a Highly Commended award in his first competition with the Society of All Artists, followed by winning the Artist of the Year 2015 title. Since 2020, his work has been regularly selected by the Royal Society of Marine Artists (RSMA) for exhibition at the Mall Galleries in London.
Recently relocated to North Devon, Stephen continues to broaden his subject matter, incorporating boats, coastal scenes and architectural elements. His works are crafted using age-old methods (hand-stretched linen, carefully layered oils, and hand-finished frames) ensuring longevity and richness.
Highly collectable, Stephen’s paintings are regularly acquired by galleries and private collectors across the UK and the USA.
Forest Gallery proudly represents Stephen Hawkins and frequently showcases a wide selection of his work. Commissions are welcome, and we are always happy to discuss specific subjects or size requirements.
