Zoltan Preiner was born in 1955 in Budapest, Hungary and studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Budapest. From a young age the artist showed great promise, though his drawing was not always contained to the most appropriate times, choosing often to sketch his classmates and teachers during academic lessons. It was during these classes that Zoltan began to include objects within the portraits and soon the desk, lunchboxes and anything in view was included. With a keen talent, professors and students alike were astounded by the ‘casual’ sketches Zoltan was producing and in turn encouraged the budding artist to pursue a career in art.

With intrigue in the arts running through the family, Zoltan visited many museums throughout his life with his parents. “Very often I stood in front of a finely painted still life or, for example, a portrait of a bishop in “black” robes, which amazed me at the time with the thousands of finest nuances and intermediate tones and the resulting plasticity. To accomplish this was my goal, which I have not lost sight of to this day.”

A key element to the success of the artist’s work is the adherence to compositional guidelines and tonal balances which he is constantly seeking to master. On beginning a painting, Zoltan first “considers which fruits I will depict and then select them so that the colour weighting is in harmony with the intended composition, whilst the golden ratio always plays a key role in the layout”.

He has held exhibitions in Budapest, Vienna, Graz, Lyon and Munich. Preiner is now one of Forest Gallery’s most sought after still life artists following exhibitions in London art fairs as well as a regular feature in the gallery.
